THIS PAGE WILL BE EDITED.

This is the end cap for the Heavy Barrel Zip37 37mm launcher. It comes with a firing pin already match-machined, but deliberately too long. It is the user’s responsibility to shorten it with a polishing medium, such as a Scotch Brite wheel, to be appropriate for their application. It WILL pierce primers as-is. I don’t know what kind of primers you’ll be using, so I made it that way so you can choose for yourself.

The cap is made from 4130 Round Bar. The firing pin is just a screw from the hardware store machined on one end to be a pin. 10-32 threads. Is is sandblasted and dipped in WD-40, but that’s all. No finish.

The Zip37 design is intended to allow the more adventurous and educated 37mm afficionado to explore higher pressure rounds and better gas seal. I’m NOT going to explain it further because you should already know what this means if you’re buying it. If you want to learn more, Google is always there for you.

My personal interest in this design is 4 fold.

1) Flares don’t go high enough with standard launchers/pressures to be safe.
2) Fireworks don’t go high enough with standard launchers/pressures to be safe.
3) Potential rescue line tossing.
4) Potentially, the coolest game of lawn darts, EVER!

What you do with it is up to you. Those are just the reasons why I made mine.

37mm is not even a firearm. It isn’t regulated by any Federal law that I know; AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT OWN/MAKE ANY ANTI-PERSONELL AMMUNITION TO GO WITH IT. If you do manufacture such ammunition, it becomes an NFA DD just like a 40mm is by default.

I do not and will not sell completed launchers. This is not a consumer-grade aplication and I don’t want to make it consumer-easy because a consumer WILL blow themselves (or others) up by not respecting the forces at work. It’s not that hard to make, so if you aren’t willing to make that small effort, I doubt very strongly that you’ve made the larger effort to learn how to operate it safely. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS AS A RESULT OF IT’S USE OR MIS-USE. MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMPETENT. IF YOU ARE NOT, DO NOT BUY IT. KNOW YOUR LIMITS. THIS IS YOUR WARNING AND DISCLAIMER. The launcher which could be made from this end cap can be very dangerous! Dismemberment, disfigurement, death, extreme property damage, etc., are all possible and YOUR responsibility.

If you make higher-pressure ammo for this laucnher, DO NOT MIX IT UP WITH REGULAR 37MM AMMO! If you don’t understand why, you shouldn’t be here!

It is constructed in the same way as the 12ga Zip gun I accidentally made many years ago, but with three significant differences:

1) It’s way bigger.
2) The barrel is heavier-walled than the “receiver,” where the 12ga zip gun has/had a heavier-walled receiver than it’s barrel.
3) Not NFA regualted. Not regulated at all…

The “Receiver” is made from an approximately 12in long piece of 2.25in OD x 0.120 wall 4130 DOM Tubing. That’s it. Square at least one end in a lathe, then weld the end cap on. Bevel the mating edges and put a lot of heat in there, you want a super-high penetration weld. You’re done with the Receiver. Weld the end cap to the squared end. You can square both ends… But you don’t HAVE to. Just make sure you weld to the squared end. I used a cheap China Freight flux-core wire welder and the weld is plenty good.

The barrel is a less common, but still very available piece of material (almost $300, delivered!). It is 2in OD x 0.25 wall 4130 DOM tubing. Mine is approx 36in long. It’s expensive and very heavy. You can buy both pieces of tubing directly from Online Metals. They will be saw cut, and you’ll have to square off at least one end on each of the tubes using a lathe. I had my local manual machine shop do it for $20. It would have been cheaper, but they have a minimum fee. I could have had them do 20 of them for the same price. Since it as at that minimum point, I had both ends of each tube squared just to be pretty.

That’s all there is to it. Square off two tubes, weld on the end cap, polish down your firing pin as you see fit, you’re done. I parkerized my “Receiver” tube just for kicks. The barrel doesn’t fit in the sandblaster…

Most normal 37mm ammo won’t fit in the barrel’s 1.500in ID. It’s is a snug fit to shells made from 1.5in OD aluminum tubing. Apply same polishing media to fit as was used for the firing pin. Don’t let it get too loose. This is intentional and I will not be changing it. If you understand what’s going on here, then you already know why.

Because the end cap and firing pin are useless pieces of metal on their own, it is legal for me to ship this to any State. If you intend to build it, check your local laws. Government be crazy an’ sheeeit. You never know what those sick bastards have snuck in on you…
